Maria Kirilenko’s still alive at the U.S. Open in doubles play, but Alex Ovechkin on Tuesday was back at Kettler Capitals Iceplex to skate with teammates.

Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom joined Mike Ribeiro, Marcus Johansson, Mike Green, Wojtek Wolski, John Carlson, Michal Neuvirth, Dmitry Orlov, Stan Galiev and Mattias Sjogren for an informal workout at the Washington Capitals’ practice facility.

Coach Adam Oates was on hand to get a glimpse of what could be almost half his team for 2012-13, whenever the season starts.

“It’s getting close to hockey time,” Oates said.

Ovechkin skated here one day last week, according to a team spokesman. Neuvirth, Carlson, Green, Orlov, Ribeiro and Galiev were on the ice multiple times last week.

With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire Sept. 15 and no talks between the NHL owners and Players’ Association, it’s very possible if not likely that there will be a lockout. Nevertheless, this was a nice turnout just after Labor Day.
