Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s first star of the week Monday after recording seven goals and two assists in the past four games.
Ovechkin, who has 15 goals and six assists in the past 12, is on a roll right now.
“I think our line play well and everybody have confidence,” Ovechkin said. “You can see Marcus [Johansson] play well, Nicky [Backstrom] play great and when your line feels good and your line feels comfortable out there you feel the same.”
Ovechkin scored twice Sunday night in a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, including an empty-netter that tied him with Steven Stamkos for the league lead with 25 goals.
Asked the difference for him and Ovechkin recently, Backstrom said: “Working harder, scoring on our chances, PP has been great.”
Some teammates watch with a sense of awe at what Ovechkin has been able to do in the past couple of weeks.
“Unbelievable. He’s a leader and I think that’s why we’ve been so successful,” defenseman Steve Oleksy said. “I think he’s an explosive player and a lot of guys feed off that. And he really brings a lot of energy to each and every game. Not just his scoring, but the way he plays all-around.”
