Mike Green is out for the Washington Capitals against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night as he battles a lower-body injury. It’s the second straight game the No. 1 defenseman has missed.
The 27-year-old took warm-ups as expected but only went through one rush with Karl Alzner. Tomas Kundratek took the other two.
“He’s a veteran. It’s going to be his call,” coach Adam Oates said after Thursday’s morning skate. “It’s an injury where when you warm up for warm-up and the intensity of the games hits you maybe it improves just enough that you feel you can go.”
Apparently it didn’t feel good enough to go. Players widely said this week that as much as the Caps need Green, he shouldn’t rush back and make things worse.
Green, who missed 41 games last year with a groin strain that became an abdominal tear, knows he can’t push himself too hard through an injury.
“It’s frustrating but you gotta be smart,” he said. “I’ve been through this before so I know what to do and what not to do.”
