Casey Wellman knew when he got the call-up to join the Washington Capitals that he might not play Tuesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

“It’s happened before. I don’t think it’d be that weird,” the 25-year-old forward said. “But it’s kind of the business. They need guys for insurance sometimes, and that’s how it is.”

Wellman was brought up from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League just for insurance, and he’s not in the lineup against the Hurricanes. That’s good news for the Caps, and that’s not a knock on Wellman; it means that center Nicklas Backstrom and left wing Jason Chimera are good to go.

Backstrom had a “rough day” dealing with an illness Monday, and Chimera left Monday’s practice early with a lower-body injury. Both are in the lineup against Carolina.

Defenseman Mike Green makes his return Tuesday night after a three-game absence because of a groin injury. Jeff Schultz is a healthy scratch.

On the Carolina side, ex-Caps winger Alexander Semin is starting on a line with Chad LaRose and Eric Staal.

Here are the Caps’ forward lines and defensive pairings:

Jason Chimera - Mike Ribeiro - Alex Ovechkin

Eric Fehr - Nicklas Backstrom - Troy Brouwer

Wojtek Wolski - Mathieu Perreault - Joel Ward

Matt Hendricks - Jay Beagle - Joey Crabb

Karl Alzner - Mike Green

John Erskine - John Carlson

Tom Poti - Tomas Kundratek
