The Washington Times - January 12, 2013, 10:13PM

The Washington Capitals will open the lockout-shortened 2013 NHL season at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 19. Their home opener at Verizon Center is Tuesday, Jan. 22 vs. the Winnipeg Jets.

The NHL released the schedule Saturday, finally, after the memorandum of understanding was signed by the league and Players’ Association. The full collective bargaining agreement likely won’t be done until the summer.

In their first week, the Caps play two games at home, against the Jets on Jan. 22 and then the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, Jan. 24. They then travel to the defending Eastern Conference-champion New Jersey Devils on Friday, Jan. 25.

Training camp starts Sunday. Players are expected to be on ice at 10:30 a.m.

Asked about potentially opening on the road, Caps players brushed off it even mattering.

“I don’t know. We’re just going to play,” forward Brooks Laich said. “I don’t think we think we’re going to play at home, we’re going to play on the road. It doesn’t matter to us, I don’t think.”
