Capitals training camp started with fanfare: Public address announcer Wes Johnson encouraging fans in chants of “C-A-P-S, Caps, Caps, Caps.” Fans who packed the team’s practice facility cheered players as they stepped onto the ice.

One player who didn’t was forward Brooks Laich, who is believed to be dealing with a groin injury. Laich shook off talk of the injury last week, even while he was skating by himself before informal workouts. TSN reported Laich would miss the first one to two weeks of the season.
