NHL captains for 2013 season

← return to Capitals Watch

With the puck dropping on the 2013 NHL season Saturday, a few teams spent this week announcing new captains. It’s defenseman Ed Jovanovski in Florida, center Claude Giroux in Philadelphia, defenseman Bryce Salvador in New Jersey and Henrik Zetterberg in Detroit.

Of course, it’s still Shane Doan in Phoenix, Jarome Iginla in Calgary and Vinny Lecavalier in Tampa Bay.

Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche is the youngest captain at 20 years, 4 months and 27 days old as of Saturday. Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators is the oldest at 40 years, 1 month and 8 days.

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals remains the only Russian NHL captain, after the Devils went with Salvador over Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are the only team in the NHL to start the season without a captain. They traded face-of-the-franchise Rick Nash to the New York Rangers in the offseason.
