Vinny Lecavalier played in his 1,000th career NHL game Monday for the Tampa Bay Lightning, hitting a mark that his former assistant called the “best” a player can reach.

“It’s the best milestone in hockey, for any position, because that means you had to play a long time for a lot of coaches in a lot of situations, a lot of contact, be dedicated,” Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates said. “I think it’s the best milestone.”

Lecavalier, who had a goal and an assist against the Caps on Saturday night, has 844 career points. And he has done it all with Tampa Bay.

“That’s very unique now in sports, guys staying a long time. And good for him,” Oates said. “He won a Stanley Cup here, he’s been the captain, he’s been the catalyst and the face of the franchise for a long time and he’s done a great job.”

Lecavalier is only 32, so he could get to 1,500 games. That would be an even better milestone.
