Alex Ovechkin will return to Washington early this week from Russia, his IMG representative, David Arbutyn said Sunday afternoon.

The Washington Capitals captain had said before leaving for the Kontinental Hockey League that he and other Russian players might not return after the NHL lockout if their pay was drastically reduced. There are concerns about escrow and future salary caps, but Ovechkin and others will not have their deals rolled back with the new collective bargaining agreement.

Ovechkin is expected to be on the ice at Kettler after returning and will address the media there. Training camp could begin as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how soon both sides ratify this CBA.

Ovechkin, who turned 27 in September, finished last season with 38 goals and 27 assists.

Center Nicklas Backstrom was on his way back to the D.C. area Sunday, according to Aftonbladet in Sweden. Backstrom was Ovechkin’s teammate with Dynamo Moscow in the KHL.
