More Capitals in town, skating

Washington Capitals training camp likely won’t start until Sunday, but more players are trickling into town and skating at the team’s practice facility.

Fifteen players were on the ice for Wednesday morning’s informal workout, including new arrivals Troy Brouwer, Karl Alzner, Marcus Johansson, Mathieu Perreault and Jeff Schultz. They joined Alex Ovechkin, Braden Holtby, John Carlson, Mike Green, Mike Ribeiro, Jason Chimera, Jay Beagle, John Erskine, Jack Hillen and Matt Hendricks.

Brouwer and Alzner traveled Tuesday, from Chicago and Calgary, respectively. Schultz had also been skating in Calgary. Johansson and Perreault returned from playing in Europe.

Expect informal skates to continue until camp opens.

Nicklas Backstrom is in town but was not on the ice. He suffered a neck injury while playing for Dynamo Moscow in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.

Players injured during the lockout do not have to be paid by their teams.
