Alex Ovechkin called himself the “king of the world” while scoring goals at will. For one week he was king of the NHL, named Monday as the first star of the week.
“I just try to do my best,” Ovechkin said.” Right now I’m scoring goals and I’m the king of the world. And a couple weeks ago I was almost in the toilet. So maybe you just forget to flush me.”
Ovechkin has won two Maurice Richard Trophies as the league’s top goal scorer, so a minor honor like this doesn’t enthrall the Washington Capitals captain.
“It feel normal. Like long time,” he said. “It feels like kind of excited.”
Ovechkin had five goals and three assists on the Caps’ 3-1 road trip at the Pittsburgh Penguins, Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers. He has seven goals and four assists in his past seven games, dating to the March 14 game at the Carolina Hurricanes.
Ovechkin has scored a goal in five straight games. He hasn’t put together a six-game streak since January 2008.
Right now he’s feeling it.
“Sometimes it’s just lucky shot, sometimes it’s lucky bounce,” Ovechkin said. “Linemates have to do very good job to find me. They did and I just have to put puck in the net.
