Alex Ovechkin took an errant puck to the face during Washington Capitals practice Thursday and got 22 stitches to close the wound.

Goaltender Braden Holtby made a save during two-on-one drills, and the puck bounced up and hit Ovechkin on the chin. He immediately left the ice in pain and went to the locker room.

Ovechkin went to the doctor’s office to get stitched up and did not speak to reporters. He posted a photo of his bloody chin on Twitter with the line: “It’s hockey ))) hahaha.”

“He went to get stitches,” coach Adam Oates said. “Part of the job.”

Ovechkin tweeted an after photo as well with the message: “After hockey!! 22 stitches hahaha ))).”

Aaron Volpatti took turns on the fourth line after Ovechkin left.

Ovechkin is on a six-game point streak. The captain has six goals and four assists in that time.

Center Nicklas Backstrom had a cut on his chin from Tuesday night’s game.

“You’re supposed to,” Oates said. “You’re a hockey player.”
