Troy Brouwer is sick and it’s unclear whether he will be able to play for the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins. The right wing missed the morning skate because he was told to stay home.

“He felt better today,” coach Adam Oates said. “He just stayed home because he didn’t get much rest. I’m wondering if just because he played a ton in Winnipeg. And then we traveled and the schedule, so he’s resting today and hopefully he’ll be good tonight. We need him.”

Brouwer played a season-high 21:13 Saturday in a 3-0 victory at the Winnipeg Jets. He practiced Monday on the second line with Nicklas Backstrom and Eric Fehr. Wojtek Wolski was in that spot Tuesday and did not take part in the scratches skate, seemingly so he could step in if Brouwer wasn’t able to play.

Recently signed and recalled defenseman Steve Oleksy was on the ice with the Caps. He was signed to a three-year, $1.6 million deal on Monday. Oleksy has a team-high 151 penalty minutes with the Hershey Bears this season. The 6-foot, 186-pound Oleksy has 11 fights in 55 American Hockey League games this season.

Oleksy will replace veteran Jeff Schultz on the Caps’ third defensive pair alongside Tom Poti.

“We need him to play,” Oates said of Oleksy. We need him to play and be matched up with Tom and we need to be able to break out of the zone. That’s why you’re a righty and it makes an easy pass to Tom and you for him. And we need to handle their forecheck. That’s what it’s about.”

Defenseman Mike Green (groin) missed his third straight practice and will be out for his fifth game of the season. Goaltender Braden Holtby will make his 10th consecutive start in goal, opposite Boston’s Tuukka Rask.

Here’s a look at the lines and pairings against the Bruins:
