Mike Ribeiro scored the game-winner in overtime as the Washington Capitals beat the New York Rangers 2-1 in Game 5 to take a three games to one lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

It was Ribeiro’s first goal and just second point of the series. He scored off a bounce that originated with a Karl Alzner shot.

Game 6 is Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.

Adam Oates said he was “worried” about the Caps’ start, and that concern was justified. A bad first shift led to a Rangers goal by Brian Boyle just 53 seconds in.

Even as the Caps struggled to find a rhythm in the first period and into the second amid more penalties, they turned things around. Evidence of improved play came with a perfect tic-tac-toe passing sequence on the power play that resulted in Joel Ward’s goal 7:44 into the second.

Braden Holtby made 18 saves in regulation and Henrik Lundqvist 26 as the Caps and Rangers went to overtime for the second time in five games.
