NEW YORK | John Erskine left Game 3 with an undisclosed injury after the Capitals defenseman took a big hit from Rangers captain Ryan Callahan late in the first period. He returned early in the second.
Callahan crushed Erskine behind the net in the defensive zone with 4:23 left in the first. The veteran who missed 12 games with an upper-body injury during the regular season left the ice five seconds later.
Erskine did not take another shift before intermission and did not come back onto the ice to start the second period. Early in the second period, he returned to the bench and joined the Caps’ penalty kill soon after.
“It was a hard hit,” coach Adam Oates said. “He wasn’t feeling fantastic, they tested him. He was fine.”
New York forward Darroll Powe left the game in the first after taking an inadvertent elbow to the head from the Caps’ Joel Ward in the corner. Powe did return.
Powe suffered a concussion during the season after a collision with Washington’s Matt Hendricks. The Rangers announced he was questionable to return.
