The Capitals beefed up their blue line Thursday, acquiring defenseman Alexander Urbom off waivers from the New Jersey Devils.

Washington later assigned center Michael Latta to Hershey of the AHL to clear a roster spot for Urbom.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Urbom is a native of Stockholm, Sweden. He has played in 14 NHL games, and one of the 23-year-old’s two goals came in December 2011 for the Devils against the Capitals. He was a third-round pick by the Devils in the 2009 NHL draft.

Latta, 22, made his NHL debut in Tuesday’s season opener at Chicago. He was part of the trade that brought Martin Erat to Washington from Nashville in April in exchange for Filip Forsberg.
