The Capitals were without injured star right wing Alex Ovechkin for Tuesday’s game against the Ottawa Senators at Verizon Center.
It was more bad news for a team that has lost five games in a row and fallen out of playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Ovechkin leads the NHL with 35 goals. Washington is 13-8-2 all time when Ovechkin misses a game since he entered the league in 2005. He sustained a lower-body injury sometime during last week’s road trip to Pittsburgh, Columbus and New York.
Ovechkin was in New York making an appearance on the Today Show on Monday and missed practice. He was also not on the ice for the morning skate Tuesday at Kettler Iceplex nor did he take warm-ups before the game against the Senators.
Caps coach Adam Oates had Troy Brouwer on the top line at right wing with Eric Fehr at that spot on the second line.
