The Nats have finally come through with a clutch hit! Three of them, to be exact!
Down 4-1 in the top of the sixth, with two outs and a man on third, the Nats got three successive RBI hits to tie the game. Cristian Guzman battled through a great at-bat, fouling off at least three 3-2 pitches before singling up the middle. Ryan Zimmerman followed with a double to left-center, scoring Guzman. And Adam Dunn finished it off with a nice at-bat of his own, running the count full and then smashing a sharp single off first baseman Casey Kotchman that scored Zimmerman.
I was talking about the need for more patient at-bats in a post yesterday, and right there you can see how it makes a difference. The addition of Dunn and the return of Nick Johnson help immensely in that department.
So it’s now 4-4 in the seventh, with both bullpens being stretched to the max. Manny Acta has already used four relievers (Ledezma, Tavarez, Shell and Hinckley, with another coming in the bottom of the inning). Bobby Cox has also used four (Buddy Carlyle, Pater Moylan, Eric O’Flaherty and Jeff Bennett).
