Thru 3: Yikes

There have been some ugly moments early this season for the Nationals, but I’m not sure any of them stack up to the first three innings here. To recap:

—Anderson Hernandez gets doubled off first base by Daniel Murphy, who had time to make a diving catch in left, get up and fire to first in plenty of time to beat Hernandez.

—Elijah Dukes, shades on top of his head, misses a two-out fly ball from David Wright in the first inning that wound up costing the Nationals three runs—two that scored on the play and one that scored on the ensuing Ryan Church single that wouldn’t have happened if Dukes made the catch to end the inning.

—Nick Johnson tries to throw out a runner at third base but fires too low for Ryan Zimmerman in the third inning, allowing a run to score.

—Daniel Cabrera needs 86 pitches to get through 2 1/3 innings, walking four and throwing a wild pitch. He gave up five runs, only one of which was earned, but didn’t help himself by spraying his fastball all over the place.

5-0 Mets after three.
