Nats acquire Kensing from Marlins

Desperate for a proven arm to shore up their battered bullpen, the Nationals made a trade this afternoon to acquire right-hander Logan Kensing from the Florida Marlins for Kyle Gunderson, a 48th-round pick in 2007. Kensing is expected to be at Citizens Bank Park for tonight’s series finale against the Phillies.

To make room for Kensing, the team optioned Jason Bergmann to Class AAA Syracuse.

The 26-year-old Kensing was 7-8 with a 5.21 ERA in the last five seasons with Florida. He posted a 3.21 ERA in 48 appearances last year.

He gives the Nationals a power arm they’ll likely use in the late innings—Kensing was primarily a 7th-inning reliever for the Marlins last year.

I’ll have more on the move later this afternoon.
