Council Member Mary M. Cheh provided a dose of humor on Tuesday between a contentious vote on ward redistricting and closed-door meeting on a fellow member’s legal troubles.

The Ward 3 Democrat donned sunglasses before entering a meeting room packed with colleagues and reporters.

For those not in on the joke, her slick eyewear was reminiscent of the pair worn by media star Sulaimon Brown, who on Monday refused to take off his shades during an hours-long hearing on Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s hiring practices despite requests from Ms. Cheh, chair of the Committe on Government Operations and the Environment.

In one tense exchange during the hearing, Council Member Yvette Alexander, Ward 7 Democrat, told Mr. Brown she would not ask him any more questions “with those sunglasses on.”
