Wal*Mart Plans Store at Wilderness Battlefield

Received via the PhilaCWNewsletter, from A Waski:

WALMART would like to build a huge store at the intersection of Rt 3 and Rt 20 in Orange County - so why is this a problem

It would be located on ground that was hotly contested during the Wilderness campaign and Jackson’s surprise flank attack at Chancellorsville!! You may have read about the proposal or seen a recentvideo of “Grant & Lee” talking about it. CWPT is working feverishly to stop Walmart as are many other entities. Of the five hearing officers, two oppose the Walmart build while the other three are willing to allow it.

Once I was made aware of the nature of the hearing I immediately decided to help in any way that I could. I asked the lady if she would like “reinforcements” to which she replied that any expenses would be paid by her and one other person, therefore finances were limited. My response: no money, just let me help and perhaps I can find some others, from both sides. Her response is set out in the mail below.

NOW for the reason I am writing you. I don’t know how many of you have seen the spot where Walmart wants to build but I have driven by it many many times and believe me, if they get to build there it will destroy the historical integrity forever!!! AND it will be just the beginning of a buildings and pavement takeover. How can we help?

This is not a Confederate thing or a Yankee thing: it’s an “US” thing! I’m in hopes that on the date of the hearing, enough of us will show up to line the walls of the hearing chambers; enough from both sides will show p to let the hearing officers know the importance of this property and our concern for its preservation. There’s no money for anyone, just the satisfaction of working together as a team, as we have so many times in the past, in an effort to preserve what so many gave so much for.

I did take the liberty of asking if there might be a place where those of us who travel considerable distances could set up a cot or air mattress and spend the night after the hearing and as you will read, she says “accommodations will be no problem.”

Well, there you have it folks. The hearing will probably be some evening in March, I’ll let you know as soon as I know. My idea is for those who can make it is to alternate (Union, Confederate, Union, etc) along the walls. No speeches, just unity in purpose. A Call to Arms!!!

With appreciation for your constancy I am

Most Respectfully,

Al
