Letters and notes from 1860 through World War II times were all kept in the attic of a plantation home on the Eastern Shore.
The Sultana sank on April 27, 1865, and some 2,400 released Union soldiers died in the event. Pam Newhouse of Ann Arbor, Mich. is part of the Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends and sent this story of her great great grandfather.
