Maryland will do something a little different this season when it runs into Byrd Stadium just before kickoff.
Two players will scamper out of the locker room with a flag. One Maryland or D.C. native will carry the Maryland state flag. One player from somewhere else will carry the American flag.
The opening week choices are cornerback Kevin Barnes (Maryland) and guard Phil Costa (American), and apparently was the brainchild of marketing guru Brian Ullmann.
That should be sort of cool, especially for the state flag. For whatever reason, few states seem to have as much of an affinity with their flag as Maryland (Texas is a highly notable exception, and Arizona, Mississippi and New Mexico probably rank up there as well).
Of course, there is the matter of picking someone to do the honors.
“It’s probably another thing we have to contemplate each week,” coach Ralph Friedgen said.
At least it should be easier than choosing a quarterback.
