Just got a message via IM from loyal reader Oakland Al
“Why couldn’t Gustav have moved this game off TV?”
It’s a worthy question.
Here are the things that seem obvious from the first 30 minutes.
* Obi Egekeze is having some serious problems. Three missed field goals have kept Delaware in the mix. Granted all of Egekeze’s misses have been from more than 40 yards, but only one of them actually looked like it was kicked all that well. Guess what I’ll be writing about this week?
* Maryland is committed to getting the ball to Darrius Heyward-Bey. He has four catches for 70 yards, and ran for a 12-yard score on an end around. That bodes well for the Terps.
* Jordan Steffy’s first-half numbers: 8-for-12, 106 yards. Josh Portis has 11 yards on two carries in his only two plays.
* Maryland has 136 yards on 18 carries; Da’Rel Scott is already at 74 yards. If the Terps pull away, it will be because of the ground game.
Overall, this isn’t terribly pretty, which isn’t atypical for a Maryland opener. But Delaware has hung around despite no passing game to speak of, and those missed field goals could help make things interesting.
Delaware gets the ball to start the second half.
