An ACC/Big Ten nugget

The Big Ten won the opener of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge last night when Wisconsin outlasted Virginia Tech.

In the process, the midwestern conference took only its third lead in the 10-year series.

That’s not a typo. Not only has the Big Ten never won the thing, it’s led it only twice before this year.

Both leads came in 2005, when the Ohio State beat Virginia Tech in the opener. Later the league was up 4-3 before the ACC rallied for a 6-5 victory.

Obviously, this means the Big Ten has never led by two games at any stage – a possibility that could unfold tonight.
