Well, here’s a Thanksgiving surprise Maryland fans probably didn’t want to see: Darrius Heyward-Bey questionable for this week with a leg injury.
That’s pretty much all of what the injury report says. That means Heyward-Bey is a toss-up as to whether he’ll play Saturday at Boston College. And a “leg” injury could mean just about anything in the lower half of the body, though the most common “leg” injuries would be knee, ankle or foot problems.
Heyward-Bey leads Maryland in receptions (38), yards (561) and touchdowns (five). He is behind his pace from last season for both catches and yards.
Much was made of his breakout game against Wake Forest, but take that out and he’s been mostly held in check since the Clemson game. In the six non-Wake games since Sept. 27, Heyward-Bey has 15 catches for 210 yards and a touchdown.
Broken down to a per-game basis, that’s 2.5 receptions for 35 yards. Hardly dominant numbers.
If Heyward-Bey can’t play against BC (a legitimate scenario, given the questionable tag), it certainly wouldn’t help Maryland. Since the Eagles are especially miserly against the run, it could hurt quite a bit. But given Hey-Bey’s role in the offense for much of the season, his possible absence might not turn out to be as damaging as someone would probably guess.
