Rout (top) five

← return to D1SCOURSE

Another entry, another speciality chart.

This time, how about a run through to determine just how often Maryland has demolished a top-five team like the Terrapins did tonight against No. 5 Michigan State.

It’s the largest margin under Gary Williams, surpassing a 15-point drubbing of Duke when the Blue Devils first visited Comcast Center in 2003. But it isn’t the largest.

Here’s all of Maryland’s 15-point victories over top-five opponents:

23: No. 20 Maryland 85, No. 4 Virginia 62 (March 6, 1981-ACC tournament)

19: @No. 12 Maryland 101, No. 5 Duke 82 (Feb. 2, 1980)

18: @No. 5 Maryland 103, No. 4 N.C. State 85 (Jan. 16, 1975)
18: Maryland 80, No. 5 Michigan State 62 (Nov. 27, 2008-Old Spice Classic)

17: @Maryland 79, No. 3 Wake Forest 62 (Dec. 16, 1961)

15: @No. 17 Maryland 87, No. 1 Duke 72 (Jan. 18, 2003)
