I’ll admit I’m surprised Maryland wound up with one of the ACC’s players of the week, regardless of the 20-17 victory at Clemson.
Its best player on Saturday, Alex Wujciak, had the misfortune of being in the same category as Duke’s Michael Tauiliili. The Blue Devils linebacker only had 16 tackles, an interception, fumble recovery and forced fumble.
Nevertheless, punter Travis Baltzmanaged to end the Terps’ season-long drought. The sophomore had seven punts and averaged 43.9 yards to share the specialist of the week award with Florida State’s deserving kick returner, Michael Ray Garvin (119 return yards and a touchdown).
Baltz is quietly enjoying a solid season, at least when he’s actually being called upon. And it comes after he predictably struggled at times as a freshman before cobbling together a 40.9-yard average (34.8 net).
With Boston College tailback Montel Harris collecting the rookie of the week honor, only Virginia has yet to produce a player of the week this season.
