Third down converters

Loyal reader BuddhaUMD did something that doesn’t happen much.

He wanted a rundown of a statistic I should be tracking but am not.

That would be third-down performance by receiver. I already keep track of down-by-down data for quarterbacks, but it makes sense to do the same for wideouts – especially on third down.

So with some time to kill here at the Gossett team house before the Tuesday presser, here’s a chart delineating the targets, receptions, yards and first downs converted for each of Maryland’s receivers this season.

PlayerTargetsCatchesYardsConversions
Ronnie Tyler86523
Da’Rel Scott65644
Darrius Heyward-Bey63421
Danny Oquendo53483
Isaiah Williams41211
Dan Gronkowski33122
Cory Jackson32352
Lansford Watson22342
Davin Meggett22131
Haroon Brown11201
Adrian Cannon11121
Morgan Green1160
Torrey Smith1000

The least surprising part of the chart: Danny Oquendo has a first down on every third-down reception this season.

The mildly surprising part of the chart: Ronnie Tyler has the most third-down targets, although it isn’t a huge shock since he’s used as a slot receiver much like Oquendo.
