Got a question via Twitter earlier in the afternoon asking when the Terps’ last big opening-game victory was.

The answer: Arguably never.

Maryland is 0-6 all-time against ranked opponents in its season openers.

When facing a ranked opponent in the first two games, the numbers are nearly as grim. Maryland is just 2-22 in those situations.

In case you weren’t aware, California will almost certainly be ranked when the Terps pay a visit to Berkeley on Sept. 5. So history doesn’t exactly favor Ralph Friedgen’s bunch.

(In more ways than one, actually. Maryland has made it out of September without a loss just once in Friedgen’s eight seasons. In four of those years, the Terps already had two losses).

Back to early games against ranked teams. Here’s a rundown of all 24 of the times Maryland has faced a team popping up in the polls in its first two games, with each decade grouped separately for the sake of some sort of division.
