Here’s your bit of Maryland nitty-gritty for the day. …

The Terrapins have had a new quarterback in camp the last two days – pretty much since offensive lineman Cody Blue went down with a shoulder injury (which might require surgery, though Ralph Friedgen said it was more likely to occur after the season if it happens at all).

Anyway, the new guy is from Florida. And he wears No. 12.

So clearly, there were some flashbacks.

The man who inherited Josh Portis‘ number (well, other than Kenny Tate) is one Jonathan Pillow.

Pillow played at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Fla., and last season completed 130 of 236 attempts for 1,538 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

What’s interesting is how Maryland has five true quarterbacks on its roster for the first time in about two years.

You might recall the bounty at the position in the spring of 2007, when the Terps came out of winter workouts with six quarterbacks.

Then Jeremy Ricker transferred into the abyss.

And Bobby Sheahin left for Division III Salisbury.

And Portis had his pop quiz fiasco.

And that left the Terps with three quarterbacks to work with for a week or so in ‘07 before Mitch Levine walked on for the season.

Needless to say, it was jarring to see five quarterbacks after running a man or two shy at times in the last 24 months. Now, all the Terps have to do is find some way of keeping them all around for the entire fall.
