The 2009 camp riddle: How many times can the offensive line be asked about.

There’s really no answer, because the questions – both direct and rhetorical – show no signs of abating.

But just for fun, here’s Ralph Friedgen’s reply to today’s version of O-line roulette.

“I see it getting better,” he said. “I don’t know where we’re at. I won’t know that until we play against some really good people and against some real conventional defenses.”

At the least, he’s come as close as possible to naming a full set of starters on the line. Center Phil Costa and left tackle Bruce Campbell are sure things. Guard Andrew Gonnella will start somewhere, depending on whether Lamar Young (left) or Justin Lewis (right) is the other guard.

Paul Pinegar appears to have outlasted R.J. Dill at right tackle.

But some instability remains. Young’s shoulder is an issue. Freshman Bennett Fulper, moved to guard this week, missed today with a mild concussion.

If the guard situation gets sorted out, Friedgen would probably be a lot happier.

“If we could solidify the line and have the same five guys working tigether, we would get better faster,” Friedgen said. “We haven’t settled inside who those guys are yet. … Playing the offensive line is like having a good dance partner. You have to work together.”
