A remarkable tale is being written in Comcast Center. No, not the one about the undersized team that has a chance to collect an NCAA tournament pretty much no one other than themselves thought was possible.
Rather, it is of the women’s team, a bunch being carried by two veteran stars (Marissa Coleman and Kristi Toliver) who have earned seven top-50 RPI victories – in the last month.
There’s 11 top-50 wins in total, which makes the matching RPI and strength of schedule ratings (both at No. 3) understandable and impressive.
But until last night, they hadn’t led the ACC since the first conference game of the season.
That’s because Florida State kept piling up victories, losing to Maryland but taking advantage of the Terps’ missteps at Duke and Virginia. But the Seminoles fell to Virginia as well, creating a tie in the loss column with less than a week to go.
It’s doable. The Terps won by four points at Boston College earlier this month, and the Eagles are 0-5 against the five teams with winning conference records this season.
Then comes Miami, which sits a half-game ahead of the last-place tie.
Nothing’s a sure thing, but the Terps have to be pleased with their position at this stage.
