A bit of personnel news to pass on related to Maryland football: LaQuan Williams is academically ineligible, but still has a chance to return after this semester.
Less than 10 minutes after coach Ralph Friedgen mentioned this off to the side after his press conference, I ran into Williams in the lobby of the team house. He seemed as upbeat as he could be in the situation, and also said his foot is feeling much better after undergoing surgery at the end of the season.
It’s obviously been a rough fall for the sophomore, who was on the wrong end of an avalanche of problems. The academic issues, combined with the injury and the subsequent absence from the field, would not be easy for anyone to deal with.
During one of the JV games – the second one, since I remember feeling cold and soaked when this unfolded – Williams dropped a couple of passes. One fan asked who made the miscue, and informed it was Williams, exclaimed “LaQuan? Our LaQuan?”
That was a way of wondering just why Williams was even playing in a JV game. After all, he enjoyed a solid redshirt freshman season that included a remarkable crucial reception in the upset of Rutgers.
Maryland has no shortage of wideouts. At the same time, it’s hard to believe the Terps couldn’t find a use for Williams if he takes care of all of the business he must face at this point.
