Delmarva/D.C. rankings

← return to D1SCOURSE

How about some praise for Longwood, the one independent in the Delmarva/D.C. After all, the Lancers are actually putting together a nice little season.

Longwood is 4-4 against Division I teams in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and D.C., and 7-8 overall.  Included are defeats of James Madison and George Washington at home. True, there’s a couple non-Division I games in there, but it’s more than plausible the Lancers could wind up around .500 for the first time since moving up to D-I earlier this decade.

The rest of the schedule reveals:

* Two more non-Division I games

* Home-and-homes with NJIT (0-14), N.C. Central (0-16) and Texas-Pan American (4-9)

* A home game with UMES (1-8) and a trip to High Point (4-9 with three non-Division I wins)

Other than tomorrow’s visit to Florida, there doesn’t appear to be a game among Longwood’s remaining 16 that looks like a pummeling waiting to happen. And as a result, it would be no surprise if the Lancers remain somewhere around the low teens in the Delmarva/D.C. rankings for much of the rest of the season.

That doesn’t mean they’ll crack the top 10. But it is progress, which isn’t always easy when you’re in the independent pool in 21st century college basketball.

Here’s the 1-through-29 rundown, with records and last week’s rankings included:
