Ah, the ultimate time-wasting entry that comes along every summer: The noting of new basketball players’ numbers.

Nope, it’s not complicated at all. And it just requires a weekly look-in at Maryland’s team roster page.

Jordan Williams will wear No. 20, and James Padgett will take on No. 35. No returning player is swapping digits.

But there has to be a way to make that slightly more interesting; and, of course, there is. So how about a rundown of who has worn those two numbers since, say, Maryland’s first NCAA tournament team under Gary Williams?

Sure thing:

No. 20

Matt Hahn (1997-98-99-00)
Darien Henry (2003-04-05)

No. 35

Lonny Baxter (1999-00-01-02)
Dave Neal (2006-07-08-09)

Let’s just say that, in terms of program history, one of those names stands out a little bit more than the rest.

And in case anyone is wondering, here are the last players to wear each available number, going back to the 1993-94 season (and including this upcoming year):

0:
1: Landon Milbourne (2010)

One last thing worth mentioning. Four of the eight unissued numbers in the last 15 years happen to be the same number as jerseys honored (not retired) by the program: Nos. 34 (Len Bias), 41 (Len Elmore), 42 (Walt Williams) and 52 (Buck Williams)
