RICHMOND – High on the list of bad things that could have happened to George Mason in the CAA final are these two gems.

One, VCU’s Eric Maynor going off, as is his wont in the postseason.

Two, an absolute inability to make a layup.

Maynor has 14 points – including a couple NBA-range 3-pointers – and Mason is shooting less than 30 percent. Toss in Larry Sanders‘ 12 rebounds (yes, 12) and the halftime margin looks about right.

Can Mason rally? Sure.  But they need to counter Sanders, they need to contain Maynor and they need to make some shots. Doing all three of those and erasing an 11-point deficit on a neutral court in name only is a tough task.
