CHARLOTTESVILLE – Just wrapped up at Klockner Stadium, where Virginia finished off an 18-6 victory.
Considering it was 18-0 with nine minutes to play, it’s fair to say (a) the score doesn’t reflect the utter dominance of the afternoon and (b) Villanova’s starters are better than Virginia’s third-stringers.
In any case, the Cavaliers move along, even if they didn’t record the second shutout in NCAA tournament history (Cornell had the first, against Washington & Lee in 1976).
It’s difficult to imagine Dom Starsia will have many problems with this one. And nor should he. Virginia won huge, avoiding any sort of rust and shaking off the ugliness of the last three weeks of the regular season.
The Cavaliers move on to face Johns Hopkins next Sunday in Annapolis. That sets up as a great doubleheader, with Duke-North Carolina in the other game.
