For anyone who happened to miss it: Maryland target DeShawn Painter committed to N.C. State yesterday.

Painter, who was released from his letter of intent with Florida, was probably the last legitimately useful big man floating around in the Class of 2009.

The Terrapins could always make a run through the JUCO ranks this month (or just pocket the scholarship and use it to build a stronger 2010 bunch). But chances are, there won’t be a freshman added to the class of James Padgett and Jordan Williams.

Of course, JUCO or no JUCO, and Painter or no Painter, the key to success next winter was, is and will continue to be the return of guard Greivis Vasquez.

If he stays, the Terps would have to be projected as a tournament team.

If he turns pro, things don’t look particularly promising.

And that’s why Painter’s decision, while a minor blow, did not possess the potential to be the best or worst thing that could happen to Maryland this offseason.
