HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – It’s still a half-hour to game time and we already have the first twist of the quarterfinal weekend.

Syracuse goalie John Galloway will apparently not start today against Maryland because of illness. That means the Orange will turn to junior Al Cavalieri to make his first career start.

Cavalieri has played all of 138:05 in his career, and played in garbage time against Providence, Army, Hobart, Binghamton and Rutgers this season.

His career numbers are good – 6.08 goals against average and .641 save percentage – and his NCAA experience consists of a scoreless fourth quarter against Canisius last year.

So is this a game-changer? Not necessarily. But Syracuse almost certainly would be better off with a fully healthy starter rather than being forced to roll the dice on a backup on nearly any day. This one’s no different.
