And the next true freshman to burn his redshirt for Marylandwill be … Pete White?
White received a look this week as a reserve at right guard, much like Nick Klemm got an extended look last week at right tackle.
Is it an ideal situation? No. But coach Ralph Friedgen was relatively impressed with what he saw.
“He’s got a pretty good week of practice, probably better than I thought he would,” Friedgen said. “Yesterday he and Klemm were in blitz drill. It used to be I never put a freshman in the blitz drill just because you could lose their confidence. I don’t have a choice this year, so they came up with a couple of really tough twists. White and Klemm picked them right up. He did a nice job today. He’s further ahead in the passing game than he is in the running game, but he’s gotten better in the running game.”
Clearly, using White was not in the short-term plan to begin with. but if injuries start mounting at guard – and Lamar Young re-aggravated a shoulder injury last week – he could be tossed in prematurely.
“I don’t know how the season is going to play out, but there’s a possibility he could play,” Friedgen said. “I’d like to hold him if I could, but we’ll have to see how it goes.”
