Virginia’s quarterback competition will head into the fall with Michael Rocco and Ross Metheny listed as co-starters at quarterback, coach Mike London said Wednesday during a teleconference with reporters.

Freshmen Michael Strauss and David Watford will be included on the second tier.

“We’ll list it as Michael Rocco or Ross Metheny,” London said. “The second group will be Michael Strauss or David Watford. Those guys are in a bunch or in a clump. Those guys are continuing to be evaluated, but someone has to separate themselves. Rocco and Metheny have played in games, and they did get more reps than Michael Strauss and David Watford.”

Rocco was 13-for-25 for 143 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions as a backup to Marc Verica last season. Metheny went 13-for-17 for 171 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

Strauss is a redshirt freshman. Watford enrolled early after wrapping up his career at Hampton High School in the fall.

London said the summer will be important in determining who will start the Sept. 3 opener against William and Mary, even if their performance won’t be closely monitored by coaches.

“It’ll be interesting to see who emerges for the team and is going to take this and improve and develop their game without coaches staring at them,” London said.
