ANNAPOLIS – The lone new starter on Navy’s offensive line is sidelined with a concussion.

Senior David Sumrall sat out Saturday’s scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Junior Andrew Barker, listed as a co-starter at left tackle before camp, is taking first-team reps.

Sumrall played in 11 games last season. Barker has yet to see varsity action, but did work as a starter at left tackle toward the end of spring practice.

“That’s one we don’t know,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “That’s one where if the doctors say he’s ready, he’s ready. Our doctors are very cautious about that. We have a pretty stringent protocol for what you’re supposed to do before a guy can even get back.”

Sumrall also missed a few practices during the week after suffering the concussion.

“He had like a 30-yard running start and got kneed,” Niumatalolo said. “It’s like someone kicking you in the head with a full running start.”
