A recent conversation with Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green:
Q: What do you see out of the secondary, starting with the corners?
Green: Corners, we’ve got David Sperry, David Wright and Kwesi Mitchell. Kwesi played last year. Those three guys are the top guys right now. We’ve got a couple freshmen, Lonnie Richardson and Parrish Gaines who are fighting for a spot. Behind those guys, it’s Jonathan Wev from last year, Ryan Green who was on special teams last year. We have good competition going. We have some young guys in the mix fighting for a spot in the two-deep at the corner spot.
Q: With Wright and Sperry, is that pretty much still a tossup?
Green: What I always like to do is cross-train guys. I like guys that can play safety and corner. Kwesi was a two-way guy, played safety and played corner. We’ll try to find the best combination. I’d say those three guys are in the mix. Two of those three will be starting.
Q: Over at safety, what are you seeing from them?
Green: At safety, Shawn Lynch, we got him from wide receiver last year and I think he’s got a lot of ability. He’s been running with the ones. Tra’ves Bush, Kwesi Mitchell, those are the top three safeties right now.
Behind them, Jordan Fraser, Brian Blick, who’s been consistent, and then that’s really the top five guys right now. You’ve got a young kid that’s made a big impression on us already, played at NAPS for us last year, in Chris Ferguson. Again, he’s maybe in the mix because he’s shown a lot of good things early in camp.
Q: Besides Kwesi, are there any other cross-training guys that you might see?
Green: Shawn Lynch. We’ve put Shawn at safety and corner. He’s a guy who can play nickel, corner or safety.
