Navy practice tidbits

ANNAPOLIS – Some quick hits from Navy …

* Senior cornerback David Wright has turned in one of the top preseason performances for Navy – perhaps enough to lock up a starting job.

Wright was listed as a No. 1 cornerback on Monday, has played in all 27 games the last two seasons. He made two starts a year ago.

“We’re happy for David,” coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “He’s a guy, too, who hasn’t played much and has been on special teams and has continued to work. He’s kept his mouth quiet. He’s been through the crucible, so to speak, and the furnace of affliction of coach [defensive coordinator Buddy] Green coaching him, and he stayed the course. Some of those guys, they don’t, but he stayed the course. He’s listened. He’s been disciplined.

* Linebacker Cody Peterson returned from an ankle injury on Monday.

* Freshman Pablo Beltran appears to solidified the holding duties on extra points ahead of safety Brian Blick.

It isn’t an entirely unexpected outcome. A specialist has far more time during practice to work with a kicker, so it is more efficient for the Mids to use a punter like Beltran to allow kicker Jon Teague more time to refine his game.

“He just has a little bit more time to work with him and seems to be a little bit smoother,” Niumatalolo said. “Brian playing safety, sometimes he has tape on his fingers. Right now, Pablo’s ahead of him.”

* Niumatalolo acknowledged whoever doesn’t win the David Sumrall-Andrew Barker-Graham Vickers left tackle competition will probably wind up as Ryan Basford’s backup on the right side.

For what it’s worth, Vickers was taking a lot of first-team reps toward the end of practice.
