CLEVELAND – It’s a statistical footnote, really, and it won’t warrant more than a passing mention should eighth-seeded George Mason upset top-seeded Ohio State on Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena to move along to the East regional.

But here it is anyway: The Patriots (27-6) will set a school record for victories if they can upend the Buckeyes (33-2) in the NCAA tournament round of 32. The current team shares a school record with (predictably enough) the 2006 Final Four team.

Another nifty note: Mason can tie 2005 Old Dominion and 2007 Virginia Commonwealth for second on the CAA’s single-season victory list.

The only team to win more than 28? The David Robinson-led Navy team in 1986 that made it to a regional final before bowing to Duke.
