In the nine years since Maryland’s athletic department moved to Comcast Center, Cole Field House has been used for offices, intramurals and even an indoor football league team.
Retiring Terrapins basketball coach Gary Williams offered an idea for another use for the building which was home to the program from 1955 to 2002.
“There should be a basketball hall of fame in Cole Field House for the University of Maryland,” Williams said. “I’ve only been back five or six times to Cole since we came here, but the last time I was there they had the old room off to the side where the swimming pool was and they had some kind of bird display, birds that were native to the state of Maryland. Well, there used to be some birds flying around in there when we practiced once in a while. All the Final Fours there, the great teams that played for Lefty Driesell there, they should be honored there.”
