Maryland suspended defensive end David Mackall indefinitely on Wednesday for a violation of team rules.

The sophomore had 30 tackles and three sacks this season. He started seven of the first eight games; Marcus Whitfield, his backup on this week’s depth chart, got the nod Saturday against Boston College before Mackall entered and played much of the game.

Mackall, who came to Maryland after a year at Fork Union Military Academy, is in his first year as a starter. He was moved from linebacker to defensive end this season and was considered a potential difference-maker when the season started.

Mackall is the sixth Maryland player to be suspended this season.

Whitfield has two tackles and a half-sack in four games this season. The sophomore’s first season was cut short when he suffered a torn right ACL on his first snap against Morgan State in 2010. He had also played on special teams a week earlier against Navy.
