Edsall: Ferrara "thinking too much"

Saturday won’t go down as one of Maryland kicker Nick Ferrara’s best days.

He had a 14-yard punt, missed an extra point, and short kickoffs on his only two attempts of the day allowed Florida State to start possessions at its 38 and 45.

It was Ferrara’s first missed extra point of his career (he’d made 43 straight) and easily his shortest punt of the season (his blocked attempt against Temple is credited to the team).

With so many problems on special teams, the Terrapins (2-5, 1-3 ACC) can ill-afford their multitasking specialist to struggle.

“Nick’s just got to learn to settle down and  just go out and kick,” coach Randy Edsall said. “When Nick just goes out and kicks, he’s fine. He thinks too much sometimes and I think that’s what gets him in trouble. Again, what we will do is go back and look at the tape and see if there was any mechanical or technical flaws in terms of his approaches to the game and work to get them fixed.”

Translated: It doesn’t sound like any of Ferrara’s jobs are in jeopardy at the moment.

“He’s got the ability,” Edsall said. “We just have to get him to relax and just go out and play instead of thinking so much.”
